Rune 2 single player3/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The real fun builds as you explore snow-covered villages and fortresses taking down axe-wielding berzerkers, then trek through dwarven mountain citadels and start collecting some seriously huge weapons. You'll spend plenty of time getting lost and backtracking.įortunately, some of the levels are quite beautiful, and the game really starts feeling like the adventure you'd expect once you finally emerge from the caves/underworld. It's a surprisingly linear game too, but unusual: the hidden crevices and hard-to-spot ropes that might lead to a secret area in another game are actually the *main path* here. You'll spend a half-dozen long levels whacking the same baddies over and over hoping for clean headshots. And those zombies of Hel are very tedious because they can only be killed by decapitation. The other folks are correct that you'll slog though dark caves full of gnolls and sewers full of zombies. If you just want to experience the single-player portion of the game, I would recommend waiting for the game to go on sale. Get this game if you're okay with older game design and production values and you want a decently challenging hack-and-slash with a unique setting. I should note that I played through the game on Windows 10 and was somehow able to run it at 1080p without any sort of tweaks, up until the very end when the game kept crashing at a cutscene and I had to run the game in "safe mode" to let it run. If you can make it through the slog, the pace does pick up and the levels and enemies get a lot more interesting. The first couple areas are just not all that fun, with boring environments and unchallenging enemies (who won't die unless you manage to chop off their heads). My biggest problem with Rune is that it's slow to start. It's a standard hero's journey, but the Norse setting is still somewhat of a rarity in games. Sometimes, finding a way forward involved some backtracking and searching, but there was only one instance where I had no idea what to do and had to look things up online. I only found a few Rune powers that were actually useful, such as unlimited throwing axes or a sword that would siphon health back to me with each successful strike.ĭespite dated graphics, the scale of the environments and the overall level design still hold up today. Your arsenal includes an assortment of swords, maces, and axes, each with a unique Rune power that you can activate with if you have enough Rune energy. The game plays a bit like a simplified and more forgiving Dark Souls it demands basic situational awareness and allows for some improvisation, such as using shields or throwing your weapons or other objects (including enemy heads). It's a primitive-looking third person hack-and-slash with a combat system that's just deep enough to keep fights interesting from beginning to end. Released in 2000 and running on the Unreal 1 engine, Rune certainly appeals to nostalgia.
